A. No.

Q. If a sibling has won the award in the past, am I still eligible to apply?
A. Yes.

Q. If a sibling has won the award in the past, does that automatically mean I will get the award?
A. No.  You are two entirely separate individuals who have applied separately and will be evaluated on your own merits.

Q. Do I have to be a straight A honor roll type of student to be eligible?
A. No.  This scholarship was created to help all eligible students, not just the top academic performers.

Q. Do I have to attend a school in Oklahoma?
A. No.  Recipients can attend an accredited college, junior college, university or technical school in the United States.

Q. Do I have to be planning a career in the fire service to be eligible?
A. No.  You may choose any area of study.

Q. Are incomplete applications considered for the award?
A. No.

Q. Do I have to send the financial information?
A. Yes.  Financial need is just one of the criteria to be considered.

Q. How is the financial information kept private?
A. You may enclose your financial information in a separate sealed envelope which will only be opened by the scholarship administrators at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.  All applications are collected at the OSFA office and kept in a secure, locked area until they are delivered to OCCF.

Q. What happens to all the applications after?
A. Recipient applications and accompanying information, except SS#’s and financial information, are kept on file at OCCF for one year and then they are shredded and destroyed.  All other applicant materials are shredded and destroyed immediately after the selection.

Q. Will the OSFA office contact me when my application arrives?
A. No.  If you want to be sure it is received, please include a self addressed stamped postcard for a reply.

Q. Will I be notified if I am awarded the scholarship?
A. Yes. Award letters are mailed to the recipients and information will be published in the August issue of the Oklahoma Firefighter newspaper.

Q. Will I be notified if I am NOT awarded the scholarship?
A. No. Due to the increasing number of applicants and the rising cost of postage, only the recipients will be notified.

Q. Is the money sent directly to me?
A. No.  The award packet presented at convention contains the information for you and the financial aid department of your school to obtain the funds from OCCF.

Note:  The award will not be paid to a “for profit” school and must be used within one year from the date of the award.  A one-time payment will be sent to the school for use in the current academic year.
